For Ubuntu 14.04 and Greater type the below command into the terminal and you will be all set:

sudo apt-get install android-tools-adb android-tools-fastboot

For 13.10 and Earlier use the Below Guide

This will work on both x86 and 64 bit versions of Ubuntu also the binaries have been updated for newer devices such as the Nexus 7.

There are two ways to do this:

A. Download this script: right click on it and go to properties, click on the permissions tab in the window that pops up and make sure “Allow executing as a program” is checked then close the window and put the script in your home directory then double click on it and select “Run In Terminal” (While the script is running you will have to enter your password when asked) After the script finishes you can test adb by plugging in your device and open a terminal and run: sudo adb devices

B. Follow the manual installation steps below

After each step hit enter to run command

1. Open the terminal and type:

(Downloads The SDK with ADB)

2. Then type:

tar xvfz android-sdk_r07-linux_x86.tgz && cd android-sdk-linux_x86

(Extracts the archive)

3. Now type:

cd ~/android-sdk-linux_x86/tools

(Enters extracted tools)

4. Then type:

sudo chmod a+x adb

(Makes adb binary executable)

5. Then type:

sudo chmod a+x fastboot

(Makes fastboot binary executable)

6. Now type:

cd ..

(Returns to previous folder)

7. After that type:

sudo mv tools /usr/local/share/android-tools

(Moves the sdk tools to your local system folder)

8. Now type:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/android-tools/adb /usr/local/bin/

(Makes a symbolic link to the adb executable)

9. Now type:

sudo ln -s /usr/local/share/android-tools/fastboot /usr/local/bin/

(Makes a symbolic link to the fastboot executable)

10. Then type:

sudo adb devices

(This will start the adb server and search for connected devices)

You should now see this in your terminal:

List of devices attached
171440424240f1d7 device (Your device number will differ from mine)
