Soul Singer – Book Review

This is the second book in Becca Andre‘s Iron Souls series. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon and should go live on February 26th.

Briar and Grayson’s story continues as the travel further North along the Ohio and Erie canal. They are trying to get to Cleveland so Grayson can be freed from Briar and will then go back to the Ferra. As you can guess, Solon does not want that to happen and sends another Ferromancer to persuade Grayson to leave with him. Farran is a fully devolved Ferromancer and has is own agenda for wanting Grayson to join the others. There are also new characters introduced in this book, Perseus and Kali are Scourge that have been tracking Farran because of the people he has been killing. Briar does not trust Kali, but they do form a tentative alliance when trying to defeat Farran. Along their route North, Briar discovers additional abilities that she possesses, but no one can figure out why.

As with the first book, the world that Andre creates is very vivid and full. The characters are realistic and complex with the reader liking them from the start or grudgingly admitting their usefulness as the story progresses. We also get to learn a lot more about Ferromancers and their counterpart the Ferra, but there is still a lot of mystery surrounding them. Briar’s crew is also developed more, and their personalities are wonderfully varied. They are not all simple minded boatmen, they are important supporting characters that fill out the story.

This was a very quick read, I finished it in one night. There was more action to this book than the first, which ensured that I continued reading so that I didn’t miss out on what happened. My only complaint is that it ended too quickly. I just hope that it won’t take too long for the next book to come out!
