Apparently I’m a little late reading this book by Lois Lowry since it’s been around since the early 1990’s and made into a movie a couple years ago. It’s the first book in a quartet, and I’ve already started on the next in the series since I really liked this one.

Jonas is a young boy growing up in the Community, where everyone follows the rules set by the Elders. There are no emotions, conflicts, hunger or hardships. But the people have no concept of colors, music or love. When Jonas is assigned to become the next Receiver of Memory and starts his training, his eyes are opened up to the way the world was and it affects him greatly. When he learns that the rules are not what is best for everyone he comes up with a plan with The Giver to bring about change. If you’ve read the Hunger Games or Divergent, you’ll see where they drew their inspiration and will enjoy this book.
