This is the first book in the Women of Whitfield series by Darlene Deluca that I found on sale through BookBub. I enjoyed reading Claire’s story and look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Claire is a woman that has been struggling with moving on from her son’s death, and even though she feels the pain of his loss daily she thought that she had been able to pick up the pieces. When her husband leaves her for another woman, she’s knocked back down again and has an even harder time getting back up. Deluca does an amazing job of making you feel for Claire and rooting for her to succeed after all that life is throwing at her. But, that feeling soon changed to one of anger and disgust once I saw that she’s on a downward spiral into alcoholism and denial of her addiction. I empathized with her daughter Elise and her struggle to balance work, family and her mother’s depression and alcoholism. Mary, Dana and Jane are three wonderful friends that do their best to keep Claire going and I wonder what their stories will be in the series. This is a great read, not necessarily a happy read, but a story worth reading for sure.
